NEWS & UPDATES 2023 2023

After the revision of the Harmonised Systems (HS) last year, the final adjustments were made to the list of goods at the start of 2023.

At the start of the year, it is advisable and important to review the goods tariff numbers previously used and to adjust the master data for companies correspondingly. Under the umbrella of the WCO (World Customs Organisation), the HS serves to classify globally traded goods. Good tariff numbers determine the amount of customs contributions when importing goods, provide standardised provisions for import and export and give a framework of basic trade restrictions.

Russia embargo – On 25.02.2023, with the 10th sanctions packet the EU imposed further export bans for important electronic goods or spare parts for lorries and jet engines that, among other things may be needed and used by the Russian military.

The extensive economic and financial sanctions not only include import and export bans for various goods, massive sanctions have also been agreed in the transport sector: Consequently, Russian and Belarussian transport companies are prohibited from entering the EU and all airports and the all European airspace have been closed to Russian airlines. In addition, Europe has closed all ports to the Russian merchant fleet.

On 01 January 2023, the Supply Chain Act entered into force, which is designed to protect the rights of people who produce goods globally for German companies.

The law includes the corporate duty of care in global supply chains and should contribute to companies assuming the responsibility for compliance with human rights and environmental standards. Companies with more than 3,000 employees have to regularly publish their documentation under constant monitoring by the BAFA.
